Porter Registers Shutout as Chiefs Rout Rockets
February 1, 2020
SPOKANE, Wash. — Bonners Ferry, Idaho native James Porter Jr. recorded a shutout against his former team on Saturday night as the Spokane Chiefs topped the Kelowna Rockets, 6-0. Winger Luke Toporowski extended his goal streak to five games and his point streak to seven to headline the Chiefs’ powerful attack.
After putting up seven goals against the Rockets on Friday night in Kelowna, the Chiefs kept their foot on the gas, scoring three in the game’s first period including a pair of markers by Leif Mattson, who was acquired by the Chiefs from Kelowna earlier this season. Minnesota Wild prospect Adam Beckman also found the net in the period, extending his WHL-leading goal total to 36 on the season.
New Jersey Devils prospect Ty Smith found a path through traffic to get one past Kelowna netminder Roman Basran at 16:09 of the second period, delivering the Chiefs’ third power play goal of the night and pushing the Spokane lead to 4-0.
The Chiefs continued to take advantage of Kelowna penalties in the third, scoring twice from Toporowski and rookie forward Brandon Reller. Toporowski has now totaled 13 points (5G-8A) over his current point streak. The Chiefs played a significant portion of the game with a man advantage, going on the power play nine times and successfully converting five of those opportunities.
